While waiting to ride Amtrak’s Southwest Chief, we had a few hours to kill in Chicago. Thankfully, Lou Mitchell’s Restaurant sits just a few blocks away from Union Station!
Open since 1923, Lou Mitchell’s is the prime example of the classic American diner. It sits in Chicago’s Greektown neighborhood, on historic Route 66, long serving as a comforting stop for weary travelers. It’s still owned by the same family that started it nearly 100 years ago.
Expect it to be busy and bustling. If you’re traveling with a group, be prepared to wait, but things move quickly. The diner space consists of rows of booths and tables, plus a pair of U-shaped counters.
Lou Mitchell’s serves all the classic breakfasts, like eggs benedict with home fries…
…waffles…
…omelets with home fries and toast…
…and breakfast sandwiches.
It’s hard to beat the vibe of a good diner, and Lou’s hits all the right notes. I could hang out in this place for hours.
